The Office of the Assistant Engineer, District Urban Affairs, Ri-Bhoi District, Nongpoh, is a Unit of the Office of the Executive Engineer, Urban Affairs, Khasi Hills, Shillong, under the Directorate of Urban Affairs, Government of Meghalaya. It was established in 1993 after the creation of Ri-Bhoi District. As the primary function of the office is to implement Development works in urban areas only, therefore, the Office/Department concentrated its developmental works in those areas falling under the jurisdiction of the Nongpoh Town Committee, Nongpoh, comprising of 18(eighteen) numbers of villages with total area of 21.5 sq.kms. these villages are as under :-

1. Nongpoh Proper 2. Pahamsyiem 3. Saiden 4. Nongkhrah 5. Pahamrioh Them 6. Mawroh 7. Mawdiangum 8. Mawtnum 9. Iewmawlong 10. Shangbangla 11. Umjarasi 12. Umlyngkait 13. Pahamlapong 14. Umryngksai 15. Umbuda
16. Umskun 17. Umshangling 18. Pahamrioh Lum

With limited amount of funds allotted by the Government, the Office has tries its level best to implement the Infrastructure Development Schemes and the Office has shown its strength and capabilities to implement the schemes not only for the public conveniences but specially for the development and welfare of the people residing in the District Headquarter from time to time.

Since the inception of the Office, the Department could take up only one Scheme and that is the Infrastructure Development Scheme (I.D. Scheme).Under this Scheme, construction of Footpath, Drain and Retaining Walls, etc…, are being implemented in most of the localities within the Nongpoh Town Committee area. Apart from the above mentioned Schemes, the Urban Affairs Department has taken up the major scheme of Constructing of Shopping Complex cum Parking Lot at Nongpoh Proper. The construction is near to completion.

The Urban Affairs Departmental complex, Nongpoh comprises of Office Building and 2 (two) nos. of Staff Quarter. This Office had been inaugurated by Shri. Paul Lyngdoh, Hon'ble Minister of Urban Affairs, Government of Meghalaya, in the presence of the local M.L.A, Dr. D.D.Lapang on the 21st June, 2008 and at present developmental works like site development and construction of 1(one) Junior Engineer quarter is being taken up.

The Nongpoh Master Plan is under preparation by the Directorate of Urban Affairs, Meghalaya, Shillong. It is expected that more Developmental Schemes can be taken up once the Master Plan is completed and approved by the Government for further development of the Nongpoh Town.
